Family of Slootsky is separated for a whole summer. The main heroine Varvara Ivanovna Slootsky doesn't want to stay alone in the stuffy big city, so she decides to spend vacation in her native town on Volga river, where has been working as a teacher. Particularly she has promised to visit her friends and students. Her granddaughter Lisa accompanies Varvara, her parents had gone to London but she didn't want to part with Murik and "lost" her passport. Soon Lisa will meet her old company which she used to be in friendly terms during previous vacations with grandmother.

Ten—year-old Varvara Smorodina is a real child prodigy, an extremely intelligent and well-read girl. She knows all about criminology and dreams of becoming an outstanding detective like her grandfather. Varvara's catchphrase is "Curious!". Arriving for the summer at his grandparents in the village of Riding, Varya is faced with a lot of mysterious crimes and undertakes investigations together with his new friend, the simple—minded village boy Vasya. It turns out that there are many secrets and unusual incidents in the quiet village!

An investigator of Internal Affairs Department Ivan Bolotnikov, who is a neighbor and a friend of the Slootskys is in charge of the case. Varvara Ivanovna began her investigation.
